Why GIFT City

Why GIFT City

We’re headquartered in GIFT City, Gujarat.

GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) is strategically located between the cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar along the banks of the Sabarmati River.

People often ask why we chose GIFT City over more obvious metros like Bangalore, Mumbai, or Gurgaon. Here is our thinking.

IAIRO exists do frontier AI research and take it out of papers and demos and turn it into systems that work in the real world - across health, climate, industry, and public institutions. That kind of work takes time. It takes patience. And it takes an environment that lets people think deeply, build carefully, and stay long enough for ideas to compound.

That’s the lens through which we chose GIFT City.

That kind of work takes time. It takes patience. And it takes an environment that lets people think deeply, build carefully, and stay long enough for ideas to compound.

That’s the lens through which we chose GIFT City.

We are building IAIRO as an institution meant to last decades. That means optimizing for focus and predictability rather than speed-for-the-sake-of-speed. GIFT City is India’s only operational International Financial Services Centre, built ground‑up to global standards. It offers clear regulatory frameworks, resilient digital and physical infrastructure, and a genuinely integrated work‑live‑social environment. It’s not a business park stitched onto a city but more like a district designed for institutions with long horizons.

GIFT City is exceptionally well connected. Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar strengthen that foundation in a very practical way. The international airport is about 25 minutes away. The Ahmedabad Metro gets you into central Ahmedabad in less than 30 minutes. The Gandhinagar Metro connects you to Gandhinagar in about 15 minutes.

GIFT city is one of the few large Indian cities where livability and scale coexist. The cost of living is 25–40% lower than most major metros. Average commute times are under 30 minutes. Daily life involves less friction. The payoff is simple but meaningful: people arrive at work with more cognitive energy, and they go home with some left.

For researchers, engineers, and senior leaders, that matters enormously. Livability isn’t a lifestyle choice, it’s what allows people to stay focused, stay curious, and stay for the long term.

The Sabarmati Riverfront captures this well. Stretching over 11 km through the city, it offers clean, walkable public space where people can slow down, think, and talk without an agenda. Many of the best ideas don’t come from meetings but from moments like these. For global researchers considering relocation, this quality of everyday life often becomes the deciding factor.

GIFT City itself runs on global norms. Grade‑A commercial spaces, district cooling, high‑uptime digital infrastructure, and integrated residential zones sit minutes apart. It’s also the only location in Gujarat with a regulated, license‑based liquor policy, part of a clearly governed framework designed for international institutions.

For us, this predictability matters. When the rules are clear, teams can focus on building.

There’s a reason global institutions have chosen to operate here. Organizations like HSBC, Standard Chartered, Oracle, IBM, TCS, and Infosys value the regulatory clarity, uptime, and long‑term stability that GIFT City offers. That concentration creates a serious, signal‑rich environment, one that research institutions and deep‑tech builders benefit from.

Ahmedabad also quietly compounds talent density. Within close proximity are IIM Ahmedabad, IIT Gandhinagar, ISRO’s Space Applications Centre, PRL, and SOUL. This creates a rare intersection of research, engineering, leadership, and public policy. It’s exactly the mix needed when AI must move from labs into deployment at national scale.

Finally, Gujarat provides the industrial spine that our vision depends on. With major investments in semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, power, and logistics, the region is becoming central to India’s physical AI stack.

We chose Ahmedabad and GIFT City because our vision demands stability, clarity, and room to compound. This geography gives us the conditions to attract global talent, reduce cognitive friction, and build AI systems that endure…systems that move from research to deployment and create lasting national and global impact.

IAIRO spans the full spectrum of AI innovation maturity, guided by one principle: building national capability through AI. Primary goals are: (a) create the highest talent needed for achieving sovereign AI (atmanirbhr) for India’s Strategic Autonomy, and (b) create a comprehensive ecosystem of AI researchers, engineers, innovators, investors,entrepreneurs-in-residence,  and resources to achieve rapid prototyping to global products, and advance India towards a product nation. Led by Prof. Amit Sheth, IAIRO’s founding members represent substantial reverse brain drain (e.g., faculty from top US universities with h-index 65-124; tech leaders/engineering professionals from top tech companies such as Apple, Google, and IBM Research, and successful entrepreneurs who have founded and grown many private and public companies. IAIRO’s high-profile board includes Ajai Chawdhary (Padma Bhushan, co-founder HCL, chairman - NQM) and Sharad Sharma (iSpirit Foundation/ProductNation, National Startup Advisory Council). IAIRO’s PPP model, sponsored by IndiaAI mission/MeitY, Gujarat DST, and the Indian Pharma Association (inaugural members, to be expanded substantially). IAIRO’s initial foundational AI themes include Enterprise AI and Embodied AI. It's applied and translational AI domains include pharmaceuticals, health, environment and sustainability, and education.
