Software Engineer Intern - Health & Biomedical AI
3–6 months
GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat (on-site)
About The role
IAIRO is building foundational AI capability for India in the public interest. Our health programme develops responsible AI systems that support clinicians, researchers, public-health institutions, and individuals seeking personalized daily guidance. As a Software Engineer Intern, you will help build data pipelines, AI-enabled services, and lightweight MVPs inspired by AI Hospital, Agent Hospital, Personal Health Insights Agents, Personicle, and Personal Care Utility. You will work with engineers and domain experts, own a defined project deliverable, and present your work at the end of the internship.
What you'll do
Support the design, development, and testing of services and data pipelines for health, biomedical, and personalized-wellness AI systems under mentorship.
Build products using Python, APIs, notebooks, Streamlit, Gradio, Flask, FastAPI, or similar tools.
Integrate ML and LLM components into workflows, including prompt engineering, retrieval, code execution, and basic agentic orchestration.
Explore de-identified or synthetic wearable, lifestyle, symptom, sleep, activity, food, medication, and health data to generate personalized insights.
Workflows such as a personalized health assistant, wearable-data insight generator, simulated doctor-patient interaction, Personicle-style health timeline, or diabetes/chronic-care lifestyle guidance.
Contribute to integrations with health-data standards where applicable, and help identify suitable open-source tools, datasets, APIs, and frameworks.
Build tests, utilities, architecture notes, and clear documentation that accelerate the team's engineering workflow.
Present progress, technical decisions, results, limitations, and recommended next steps to project leads.
Domain & project focus
Agentic clinical simulations: AI Hospital and Agent Hospital concepts involving patient, doctor, nurse, examiner, or supervisory agents.
Personal health intelligence: Systems that use LLM agents, retrieval, code generation, and wearable data to produce personalized insights.
Longitudinal personal context: Personicle and Personal Care Utility concepts using multimodal data, individual baselines, timelines, and contextual reasoning.
Applied wellness and chronic care: Daily guidance across sleep, food, movement, stress, medication adherence, diabetes, and other long-term health needs.
Required qualifications
Currently pursuing a M.Tech / PhD (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI/ML, Data Science, Biomedical Informatics, or a related field.
Programming proficiency in Python; familiarity with software-development principles, debugging, testing, and version control (Git).
Comfort with data handling using Pandas/NumPy and basic SQL, plus exposure to ML libraries such as PyTorch or scikit-learn.
Understanding of APIs, data handling, and backend/frontend workflows.
Experience with LLMs, SLMs, model training and pre-training.
Ability to convert complex ideas into structured notes, comparisons, diagrams, product requirements, and testable hypotheses.
Strong analytical thinking, clear documentation skills, curiosity, and a careful approach to sensitive health information.
Preferred
Experience with LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI, AutoGen, or comparable agent frameworks.
Experience building small demos with Streamlit, Gradio, Flask, FastAPI, or Jupyter Notebook.
Coursework or projects in healthcare, biomedical informatics, chronic disease, diabetes, fitness, wearables, behavioral health, or digital health.
Familiarity with wearable-style data such as steps, sleep, heart rate, glucose, activity, symptoms, medication, or food logs.
Understanding of exploratory data analysis, data visualization, cloud platforms, or containers such as Docker.
A portfolio (GitHub, papers, prototypes, or projects) demonstrating relevant work.
Expected deliverables
A working production grade MVP tied to an agreed health-AI use case.
Synthetic datasets or mock user profiles for safe testing where needed.
Technical documentation covering architecture, setup, workflows, evaluation, limitations, and next steps.
A final presentation and code handover suitable for internal continuation and the intern's portfolio.
What you'll gain
Direct mentorship from engineers, AI researchers, and health-domain experts.
Influence and shape the design and user experience of products that could contribute to India's future health-tech stack.
Exposure to end-to-end, responsible health AI, from data handling to prototype delivery.
A completed project deliverable and final presentation for your portfolio.
Certificate and potential pathway to full-time roles based on performance.
Governance & data handling
This internship may involve sensitive health information. Interns will work only with de-identified or synthetic data under defined access controls and a named supervisor, following IAIRO's data-governance policy, India's DPDP framework, and applicable ICMR ethical guidance for AI in biomedical research.
Equal opportunity & fair hiring
